Students will have a unique experience on one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of the River Thames. We plan to be on the water every day (weather permitting). It’s a great opportunity to meet new friends from different schools, learn a new skill and enjoy the health benefits of rowing as well has having a lot of fun!
Course Content:
- Day 1: Learn about rowing equipment, stroke and technique, confidence and balance skills, and capsize drills.
- Day 2: Sculling (rowing with two blades) in crew boats, basic manoeuvring in small boats.
- Day 3: Developing crew sculling and navigating the river.
- Day 4: Introduction to racing.
Course Requirements
As the course builds on the skills taught in previous sessions, only register your child if they can attend all the course sessions. We cannot mix and match between courses. Participants are expected to be on time every day, participate in the full session and adhere to all instructions and guidance from the coaches.
Course Cost
The cost of the course is £165 and includes a Wallingford Rowing Club t-shirt. In case the course is oversubscribed, priority will be given to children who have siblings or relatives already rowing with Wallingford Rowing Club. We will email you in April to confirm if your child has a place. Full payment will then be required via BACS to secure your child’s space. A small number of bursary places are available, please email WallingfordLTR@gmail.com for more details.
What’s next for Learn to Row Students?
Many Learn to Row students joined WRC and are currently enjoying medalling success in many regional and national events. For many of those who successfully complete our Learn to Row course, there will be the opportunity to join WRC to increase their rowing and club experience on and off the water.
Please note, for applicants currently in Year 8 we hope to be able to offer a place to all who successfully complete the course and would like to join the club, however if demand is high this could be limited by capacity. For applicants currently in Year 9 we are anticipating that spaces to join the club after completing the LTR will be very limited this year due to capacity limitations, and as such the majority will unfortunately not be offered a place.
