Year: 2023

  • Annual Club Dinner & Awards

The club parties like it rows – with great energy and success! We held our annual club dinner in Cholsey Great Hall with over 110 members enjoying a 3 course meal, speeches, raffle and some very fine Scottish country dancing. Award winners for 2023 were: Senior Woman – Liberty Barlow; Senior Man – Chris Boyles;…

  • Wingfield Sculls

Chris Revell competed in this, arguably the toughest race, and certainly one of the oldest, for single sculls. Founded in 1830 it follows the championship course from Putney to Mortlake (except in exceptional years) and is raced side by side, this year by 5 scullers. Even to compete is a great achievement, and congratulations to…

  • Coupe Des Dames et Messieurs, France

Our Masters spent the weekend in Angers, France competing at this 15km head race. Although Saturday’s racing was cancelled due to a storm, the women resorted to relay ergs to sort out the winner and Wallingford won! I’m sure they didn’t want to travel all the way to France just to erg, and luckily racing…

  • Weybridge Silver Sculls

Our single sculler Chris Revell won the prestigious Silver Sculls trophy at Weybridge this weekend, emulating the likes of Sir Steve Redgrave, Guy Pooley and Dan Topolski in previous years. Janet Mehers also won WMas 1x (combined D-G age groups.) Two entries, two wins!

  • Pairs Head

The second major head race of the season on the Tideway saw no fewer than three wins for Wallingford! Emma Butler and Sam Burrows retained their WMasB 2- title by less than a second; Liberty Barlow and Lucy Walker won Club W 2-; and Chris Revell and Mariann Novak won Mixed 2x.

  • Reading Small Boats Head

The Juniors had another excellent day at one of our favourite local head races. On an October day where many got a little sunburned in temperatures of around 23C we saw wins for Annie Collins in WJ17 1x, Niamh McAdden and Emma Moroney in WJ18 2-, Lewis Strange and Tom Fanstone in J15 2x and…

  • Wallingford Long Distance Sculls

The club put on another great event on our home stretch of water for 400 crews from around the country. A big thank you to all the volunteers – the events committee, club members and parents – who helped make it so successful. We had a number of winners: Andy Hull, our Treasurer, in OMasC…

  • Scullers Head

Four of our scullers raced in the Vesta Scullers Head on the Tideway last Saturday. First raced in 1954, this is the UK’s largest race for 1x and attracted no fewer than 543 competitors this year. Huge congratulations to all of our scullers for finishing in the top 3 in their categories: Mariann Novak in…

  • City of Oxford Regatta

Another superb outing for the whole club – Seniors, Masters and Juniors (and parents!) all mixing it up and having a great time together at one of our most local regattas. Highlights from the weekend included Fi Halliday enjoying her first racing – reaching the final of the W8+ no less – and Ruth Haigh…

  • Maidenhead Regatta

Another hugely successful outing for our Juniors to this popular regatta. I strongly suspect they like it so much because it is only 500m long… but they also award old-fashioned glass-bottomed tankards as prizes, which is becoming increasingly rare. The organisers nearly cancelled it in the face of Storm Antoni, and in the end we…
