Ellie Piggott and Lottie Burgess had an incredibly successful weekend, winning the women's lightweight doubles at the World University Rowing Championships in Kazan, Russia. They flew out on the Wednesday and, after a long 12 hour journey, finally arrived in Kazan. All the accommodation and facilities there had been built especially for the World University Games in 2013 and so they along with the other athletes were the first to try them out. Their first race was the heat on Friday, which they won ahead of France and Poland. Their time was within half a second of Russia, the winner of the other heat, so although confident they were going into the final, they knew that it would be a tough race. Strong winds on Sunday made for tough conditions on the water, but given all the bad weather we've had in England this summer they were well-prepared! In the final they had a good start and led the race from the early stages, with a 0.5 second lead over the field after 500 metres. Ellie and Lottie extended this lead at each marker, but it was a closely fought race. They took gold in a time of 7:16, with Russia two seconds behind in silver, and France in third. The whole British team did well, with all four boats reaching their respective A finals, and the men's eight winning a silver medal.
