Wallingford Rowing Club made a great showing at Oxford City Royal Regatta last weekend, bringing home trophies in nine categories over two days of racing. From novice to elite and junior to veteran, Wallingford competitors represented the high standard of rowing produced by the club at all levels of ability and age.

The large contingent of Wallingford novice rowers taking part was a testament to the success of the club’s ‘Learn to Row’ program, which encourages adult beginners to take up the sport. There was a win on Saturday in the Men’s Novice Coxed Four category for Rebecca Collier, Jack Shuttleworth, Alastair Collier, Bill Cole and Ben Colwill, coached by Helen Popescu, who also reached the final of Intermediate 3 Coxed Fours on Sunday. Richard Thwaites and Steve Hall also won Men’s Novice Double Sculls and Kasia Bera won Women’s Novice Single Sculls.

At the other end of the spectrum, Charlie Newbould and Bodo Schulenburg were successful in the Men’s Elite Double Sculls, and there were wins in the Mixed Double Sculls category for Emma and Alex Cadoux-Hudson on Saturday and Caroline Greves and Chris Boddy on Sunday. Wallingford’s strong junior squad maintained its winning ways thanks to sisters Lucy and Alice Walker, who celebrated success in the Women’s Junior 15 Single Sculls and Women’s Junior 18 Single Sculls respectively. Ed and Rob Hares, rowing as a Wallingford / Army composite crew, completed the haul of silverware with a win in Men’s Intermediate 1 Pairs.
